Aim of Diploma course in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM):

The basic aim of the diploma course in General Nursing and Midwifery is geared to the health needs of the individual, family, community and society at large by preparing nurses with sound knowledge & skill to function as an efficient member of the health team through their personal and professional development with technological advancement.

Objectives:

The diploma nurse on completion of this course will be able to:
  • Apply knowledge from physical, biological and behavioral sciences, medicine including alternative systems and nursing in providing care to individuals, families and communities.
  • Provide nursing care based on steps of nursing process in collaboration with the individuals and groups.
  • PProvide promotive, preventive and restorative health services in line with the national health policies and programmes.
  • Communicate effectively with individuals and groups, and members of the health team in order to promote effective interpersonal relationships and teamwork.

Eligibility Criteria for Admission in GNM:

  • Minimum age for admission will be 17 years as on 31st December of that year. The upper age limit is 35 years. For ANM and for LHV there is no age bar.
  • Minimum education should be 10+2 passed in Arts or Science stream with aggregate of 45% marks.
  • Those who have cleared 10+2 vocational ANM course from the school recognized by Indian Nursing Council.
  • 5% relaxation is permitted to SC/ST/OBC students.
  • Students should be medically fit.

Number of seats: Number of seats available for admission is 40.

When the student proceeds on Annual leave; parents/ local guardian shall take full responsibility of their children being taken from the hostel and brought back to the hostel.

Clinical Experience:

The students will be posted in the following Hospitals for clinical experience:
  • Hayat Hospital (parent Hospital)
  • Gauhati Medical College Hospita
  • Dr. Bhubaneswar Boruah Cancer Institute.
  • Marwari Maternity Hospital & Research Centre.
  • LGB Regional institute of Mental Health, Tezpur.
  • LGB T.B. Hospital, Guwahati.
  • Modal Hospital, Sonapur, Kamrup.
  • Dhienpara Maternal & Child Health Hospital, Guwahati

Course Duration of GNM = 3 Years

  • Weeks available per year = 52 weeks.
  • Vacation = 6 weeks.
  • Gazette holidays = 3 weeks.
  • Examination (Including preparatory) = 5 weeks.
  • Available weeks = 38 weeks.
  • Hours per week = 40.
  • Practical = 30 hours per week.
  • Theory = 10 hours per week.
  • Internship practical (Optional) = 48 hours per week
  • Hours available per academic year = 1520 (38 weeks x 40 hours)

Examinations:

The first phase of training covers a period of three months and the phase is termed as preliminary training which is the part of the three years General Nursing and Midwifery course.

Yearly examinations will be conducted by the Assam Nurses Midwives and visitors council,which is a regulatory Body for Nursing Educational Standards. Sessional and pre-final examination will be conducted by the Institute. The students who obtain 50% marks in these examinations will be allowed for the council examination, provided the standards of their achievement in classroom assignments and clinical area are satisfactory.

Relevant change in the ANC Rules will be applicable to the School of Nursing also.

Supplementary examinations:

Council may hold supplementary examination after six months of the annual examination.
If any student fails in one theory/practical (However she/he may be allowed to join in the next year of study), she/he will be required to appear for a supplementary examination held subsequently in the subject she/he fails in.

Internal Assessment:

Internal assessment for both theory and practical examination will be given by Institute that is assessed based on performances in the class tests, unit tests, clinical evaluation, punctuality & discipline, absenteeism, abide by institution rules and regulations, attitudes towards seniors and teachers.

Standard of passing and obtaining a class:

Standard of Passing :

  • A student must pass separately in theory and in practical examination of each paper.
  • All subjects except English at least 50% marks in internal and external assessment for both theory & practical paper separately.

Obtaining a class:

No class will be awarded on the yearly performance. The class will be awarded on the total performance after three years of examination.

General rules for college, university and council yearly examination:

  • If a student fails in theory or practical paper of a subject she/he has to reappear for both the papers.
  • A student shall be eligible to appear the yearly examination only if she/he qualifies the pre-term examination for both theory and practical of each subject separately.

Note :

  • Original documents are to be produced during personal interview.
  • Application may be rejected if the necessary formalities are not being fulfilled
